Measuring coating thickness on polished cross sections

One important aspect of the reliability of the process and its quality control is the question as to the actual coat thickness. One should always bear in mind, however, that the mechanical coating of elastomers is a mass process, which results in a gaussian distribution. At OVE the coating thicknesses are 2 - 8 µm

Unfortunately there is still no in-process system that can be applied to measure the
coating thickness of elastomers. The use of light microscopes is clearly limited when dealing with low µ.

The processes used for coated metal parts do not yield acceptable results with elastomer carriers. Only slices measured with an electron microscope or polished cross sections on embedded samples yield usable results.
